Choosing where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City is one of the most important decisions you'll make before your trip. While many first-time visitors naturally gravitate towards District 1, there is no single hotel that suits everyone. Some travellers prioritise luxury and world-class service, while others are looking for a stylish boutique stay, excellent value for money, or a convenient base for exploring the city.
Over the years, we have stayed at a growing number of hotels across Ho Chi Minh City, ranging from boutique properties to internationally recognised luxury brands. Those experiences have shown us that every hotel has its own strengths, making it far more useful to match a hotel to the type of trip you're planning than simply choosing the most expensive option.
Rather than compiling a long list of hotels from booking websites, this guide focuses primarily on properties we have personally stayed at and reviewed. Our recommendations are based on our first-hand experiences, allowing us to share not only what each hotel offers, but also who we genuinely think it is best suited for.

If we were planning our own trip today, Hotel des Arts Saigon would probably be our default recommendation for most travellers seeking a luxury stay in Ho Chi Minh City. However, travellers looking for the city's most luxurious hotel experience should still consider Park Hyatt Saigon, while Fusion Original Saigon Centre remains one of the strongest options for travellers prioritising convenience and value for money.

Which Area Should You Stay in Ho Chi Minh City?
Many first-time visitors researching Ho Chi Minh City will come across recommendations for several different districts. However, if you're visiting the city for the first time, our recommendation is simple: stay in District 1.
As Ho Chi Minh City's central business and tourist district, District 1 is home to many of the city's best-known attractions, shopping centres, restaurants and cafés. More importantly, it is where most visitors will naturally spend the majority of their time, making it the most convenient base for exploring the city.
For Most Travellers, Stay in District 1
District 1 offers the best balance of convenience, walkability and atmosphere. Many of Ho Chi Minh City's most popular attractions are located here, including Nguyễn Huệ Walking Street, Saigon Centre, Ben Thanh Market, the Central Post Office, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Saigon Opera House.
The district is also home to a huge concentration of restaurants and cafés. Whether you are looking for local Vietnamese food, international dining options or popular cafés such as Cộng Cà Phê and Highlands Coffee, you will rarely need to travel far.
One thing we have consistently noticed during our visits to Ho Chi Minh City is how often our days naturally revolve around District 1. Even when we travel elsewhere for a specific restaurant, shopping mall or attraction, we usually find ourselves returning to District 1 afterwards. The district is not only where many of the city's major attractions are located, but also where much of Ho Chi Minh City's energy and atmosphere can be felt.
This is also reflected in our hotel stays. Of the eleven hotels we have stayed at and reviewed in Ho Chi Minh City, every single one is either located within District 1 or immediately adjacent to it. After multiple visits, we have yet to find a compelling reason to recommend a first-time visitor stay elsewhere.
What About District 3?
District 3 is the most realistic alternative to District 1. Located immediately next door, it offers a slightly quieter and more local atmosphere while still remaining close to the city's main attractions.
During our own visits, both Hotel des Arts Saigon and Novotel Saigon Centre were located in District 3. Despite this, we never felt disconnected from the city centre, as District 1 was always just a short walk or Grab ride away.
If you find a hotel you particularly like in District 3, there is no reason to avoid it. However, given the choice, we would still recommend District 1 first.
Our Recommendation
If you are visiting Ho Chi Minh City for the first time, stay in District 1.
The district offers the best combination of attractions, dining options, shopping centres, cafés and convenience. While District 3 can also be a good option, particularly for travellers seeking a slightly quieter environment, District 1 remains our preferred recommendation for the vast majority of visitors.
Which Hotel Should You Choose?
After staying at eleven hotels across Ho Chi Minh City, we have found that the best hotel often depends on your budget and priorities. Rather than ranking every hotel from best to worst, we believe it is more useful to focus on the hotels we would personally recommend at different price points.
Budget Around S$100–150 Per Night
Our Recommendation: M Village Tôn Thất Đạm
If your budget is around S$100 to S$150 per night, M Village Tôn Thất Đạm remains one of the most practical options in Ho Chi Minh City. Located in the heart of District 1, the hotel provides a modern boutique-style experience at a price point that is often difficult to find in the city centre.
That said, this is very much a value-focused recommendation. The hotel does not offer the same facilities, service standards or overall experience as the higher-end hotels featured later in this guide. However, considering its location and price, it remains a solid option for travellers who prioritise convenience and affordability.

This is the price range where competition becomes much stronger, but Hotel des Arts Saigon remains our top recommendation.
Choose Hotel des Arts if you are looking for a luxury boutique hotel experience. While several hotels offer similar facilities and room sizes, Hotel des Arts stands out because of how memorable the overall experience feels. The combination of thoughtful service, elegant design, warm lighting and boutique luxury styling creates an atmosphere that few hotels in the city can replicate.
