Laos Travel Guide — A Realistic, First-Timer-Friendly Overview
Laos is one of Southeast Asia's quieter destinations, offering a noticeably different travel experience from its more popular neighbours, Thailand and Vietnam.
When we first planned our trip, we weren't entirely sure what to expect. We knew Laos was less developed, and getting there from Singapore wasn't necessarily as convenient or affordable as travelling to other parts of the region. Yet, after years of putting off a visit, we finally spent six days exploring Luang Prabang and Vientiane in April 2026.
What we discovered was a country with its own distinctive charm. From Luang Prabang's heritage streets and riverside cafés to Vientiane's increasingly modern cityscape, Laos offered a slower, more relaxed way of travelling. The impressive Laos-China Railway also made exploring both cities considerably easier than we had anticipated.
Laos isn't without its challenges, particularly when it comes to infrastructure, seasonal weather and international flight connections. However, for travellers who appreciate cultural experiences, natural scenery and a less hurried itinerary, it can be a rewarding destination.

Is Laos Worth Visiting?
Before planning your itinerary, it's worth considering whether Laos is the right destination for you.
Compared with Thailand or Vietnam, Laos offers fewer big-city attractions and a generally slower pace of life. Some travellers may find this refreshing, while others might prefer destinations with more extensive shopping, entertainment and dining options.
For us, Luang Prabang was the highlight. Its UNESCO-listed heritage, beautiful surroundings and relaxed atmosphere made it particularly enjoyable. Vientiane, meanwhile, offered a different perspective on Laos, with modern cafés, comfortable hotels and a laid-back capital-city atmosphere.
We enjoyed our visit, although we wouldn't necessarily recommend Laos for a rushed weekend getaway from Singapore. Flight connections and travel time make a longer stay more worthwhile.

Why Visit Laos?
Laos may not have the bustling cities of Vietnam or the extensive tourism infrastructure of Thailand, but that is also part of its appeal.
One of the things we appreciated most was how easy it was to slow down, particularly in Luang Prabang. Instead of spending each day rushing between attractions, we could enjoy a leisurely coffee, wander through the old town or spend an afternoon exploring the surrounding countryside.
The country's natural attractions are another highlight. Kuang Si Falls, with its striking turquoise pools, was among our favourite experiences. Luang Prabang's temples, traditional architecture and Mekong River setting also give the town a distinctive character.
We were also pleasantly surprised by some aspects of Laos' development. Although roads and public infrastructure can feel dated, modern cafés, shopping developments and comfortable ride-hailing services are increasingly common.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was the Laos-China Railway. Clean, modern and comfortable, it has made travelling between major destinations such as Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang much more practical.
For travellers who enjoy slower journeys and are comfortable with some of the realities of visiting a developing country, Laos offers plenty to appreciate.
Best Places to Visit in Laos (Based on Our Trip)
During our six-day visit, we focused on two destinations: Luang Prabang and Vientiane. Although both are in the same country, they offer noticeably different experiences.
Luang Prabang — Heritage, Nature and a Slower Pace
Luang Prabang was easily our favourite destination in Laos.
The historic town has a relaxed atmosphere, with traditional temples, colonial-era buildings and cafés scattered throughout its streets. Unlike larger Southeast Asian cities, there is little pressure to fill every hour with activities.
Some of our favourite experiences included visiting Kuang Si Falls, stopping at Laos Buffalo Dairy, exploring the old town and enjoying coffee beside the Mekong River.
The café culture was particularly enjoyable, while the town's compact size made it easy to explore without constantly relying on transport.
For first-time visitors, we would recommend spending at least three nights here, particularly if you enjoy taking things slowly.
Vientiane — A Relaxed Capital with Modern Comforts
Vientiane offers a very different experience from Luang Prabang.
As Laos' capital, it has more of the features associated with a modern city, including shopping malls, international hotels, cafés and restaurants. However, it remains noticeably quieter than capitals such as Bangkok or Hanoi.
We found Vientiane pleasant for a short stay, particularly because of its relaxed atmosphere and the availability of comfortable accommodation.
Attractions such as Patuxai provide opportunities for sightseeing, while the city's cafés and restaurants make it easy to enjoy a slower day between activities.
Although we preferred Luang Prabang, we were glad to have included Vientiane in our itinerary. Two nights felt sufficient for our visit, and we would recommend combining it with Luang Prabang rather than treating it as the main highlight of a longer Laos holiday.
Laos Itineraries & Travel Planning
How much time should you spend in Laos?
Based on our experience, the answer depends largely on whether you intend to visit just one destination or combine several.
-
3–4 days: Focus on Luang Prabang, allowing time to explore the old town and visit Kuang Si Falls.
-
5–6 days: Combine Luang Prabang and Vientiane using the Laos-China Railway. This was our preferred approach.
-
8–10 days: Consider adding Vang Vieng for a more extensive journey through Laos.
For our own trip, we spent three nights in Luang Prabang and two nights in Vientiane, with travel between the cities by train.
Six days felt like a comfortable amount of time. We were able to experience the main highlights without rushing, while still leaving time for cafés, hotel facilities and unplanned breaks.
We would generally recommend this duration to first-time visitors who want to experience both cities.

Getting Around Laos
Travelling around Laos can require more planning than visiting some of its Southeast Asian neighbours, but our experience was more straightforward than expected.
The Laos-China Railway
The Laos-China Railway was one of the most impressive parts of our trip.
We travelled between Vientiane and Luang Prabang in Business Class, paying LAK 975,000 per person each way during our visit. The trains were clean, comfortable and punctual, and the journey was considerably more pleasant than we had anticipated.
The railway makes it much easier to combine destinations such as Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang without spending long hours travelling by road. However, travellers should still account for the journey between the railway stations and their hotels, as the stations are not necessarily located in the city centres.
Getting Around the Cities
Within Vientiane and Luang Prabang, we relied heavily on Loca, a local ride-hailing service. We found it convenient and reasonably priced, with modern vehicles that were generally comfortable and well maintained.
In Luang Prabang, much of the historic town can also be explored on foot, making it particularly suitable for travellers who prefer a relaxed pace. Our advice is to arrange transport in advance for longer journeys and allow additional time when travelling to railway stations or airports.
Laos Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors
A few practical considerations can make a significant difference when planning your first trip to Laos.
-
Allow enough time: Laos is better suited to a relaxed itinerary than an ambitious schedule covering too many destinations.
-
Consider flight costs carefully: Accommodation, dining and local transport were generally affordable during our trip, but flights from Singapore were relatively expensive.
-
Use the Laos-China Railway: It is a comfortable and practical option for travelling between Vientiane and Luang Prabang.
-
Download Loca: We found the app useful for getting around both cities without needing to negotiate individual journeys.
-
Be prepared for heat and haze: During our April visit, the weather was hot and hazy, which affected the experience of some outdoor attractions.
-
Keep an open mind about infrastructure: Laos is still developing, and roads, pavements and other public facilities may not match what travellers are accustomed to in Singapore.
One of the biggest lessons from our trip was that Laos becomes much more enjoyable when expectations are realistic.
It is not a destination where everything works as efficiently as Singapore, but with a little preparation, travelling around the country can be surprisingly comfortable.
Laos Hotel Reviews
During our visit, we stayed at two very different hotels, reflecting the contrasting characters of Luang Prabang and Vientiane.
Both offered excellent service, although their facilities and overall experiences were quite different.
Our hotel reviews focus on the actual rooms we booked, service standards, facilities, location and whether we felt the stay represented good value for money.
Luang Prabang
3 Nagas Luang Prabang – MGallery Collection
We spent three nights at this charming heritage boutique hotel in the heart of Luang Prabang.
Its central location was a major advantage, allowing us to explore the old town, temples and nearby cafés conveniently.
The service was warm and attentive, while the traditional architecture gave the hotel a distinctive character. However, guests should be aware that the historic buildings also come with limitations, including the absence of an on-site swimming pool and gym.
Vientiane
Crowne Plaza Vientiane
For our two nights in Vientiane, we stayed at Crowne Plaza, a modern full-service hotel with spacious rooms and excellent facilities.
We particularly enjoyed the service, swimming pool and comfortable room, which provided a welcome contrast to our heritage accommodation in Luang Prabang.
For travellers seeking a modern international hotel in Vientiane, it is a property we would readily consider staying at again.
