Room Service Review: Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa
When it comes to hotel room service, we generally have one simple guideline in determining if that particular hotel’s room service is worth it. We expect prices to be quite high, as with most hotels. Correspondingly, in terms of taste, the food should be similar to what one can find in good restaurants in that country. Based on this, we rate Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa’s room service!
Being in Singapore, we know we had to order some of Singapore’s signature dishes. Hence, the world-famous chicken rice and satays!
Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa offers satays in a set of 12 sticks. You get to choose from three types of meat: chicken, beef, or lamb. If you cannot decide, do it our way and order all three types (4 sticks each of chicken, beef, and lamb). It comes with onions and cucumber, ketupat (compressed rice), and of course the yummy peanut gravy.
We must say we were really impressed with their satays, especially with the peanut gravy. The gravy was thick without being too nutty, and it goes perfectly with each stick of satay. The ketupat was also excellent, without being too hard or too mushy. This was a good start to our room service!
Hainanese Chicken Rice:
This humble dish is arguably one of Singapore’s most famous dishes. Some of the best versions reside in simple coffee houses, where one plate may cost only S$3 or S$4. Many local hotels attempt to replicate it, although most come up with less than perfect versions. Hence, it is not easy to satisfy the seasoned traveller, especially one who is paying a premium for room service as well.
When this dish first arrived, we were already smiling. We could smell the fragrance of the chicken rice as it entered our room. The chicken broth soup was the first thing we tasted, and boy was it delicious. Next up, the chicken. It was satisfyingly oily, without being too oily. This means the chicken was not cooked in a “too healthy” way that no longer represents what chicken rice is all about, without being too oily to the point that one is drinking oil. In a nutshell, the chicken was good. For those who want an authentic taste of Singapore chicken rice, eat the skin too. It’s really the tastiest part of the dish!
When coated with some dark soya sauce, minced ginger, and chilli, it provided a symphony of tastes that makes you want to gobble it all down. For those concerned about the chilli, fret not. It was obviously intended to suit the palates of those who cannot take spicy food while retaining the taste of what chilli should be like. It was perfect for me since I am not a big fan of spicy food anyway. The rice was fragrant enough, although not the most fragrant one I have tasted. I cannot have too many complaints though, since the rest of the dish was just perfect. All in all, a wonderful main course.
For some reason, Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa does not offer any local desserts for their room service. Hence, we were basically left with more conventional desserts that one might see in Europe or the USA. The profiteroles were highlighted as their signature dish so we figured we should try it out.
It consisted of choux balls filled with vanilla ice cream, with chocolate sauce generously drizzled over it. Strawberries and raspberries were also placed alongside the profiteroles, to create a more holistic dessert.
With dessert being the last course, we were pleasantly surprised when the ice cream did not melt and generally held its structure within the pastry puffs. This is a testament to the quality of food served by the hotel. A standard dessert, it was delicious and provided a fitting end to our three-course room service meal.
