HOAN KIEM LAKE
Picture
A distinctive location for many, it is a focal point for tourists to meet and begin their way into the Old Quarter. Yet, the lake itself also has much to offer.

Spanning approximately 1.5km in perimeter, it can be considered a manageable task to walk around it. Right in the middle of the lake is a small island, where the Tortoise Tower sits on. With the lake’s many vantage points, you can find a good spot to sit on a bench and admire the beauty of the lake and the Tower.

During weekend evenings, the roads surrounding the lake gets busy. With people that is! Designed to be a temporary night market, the roads are closed and many locals throng the streets, playing simple games among themselves and getting a caricature done. Local musicians set up their instruments and play to their hearts’ content, jamming local rock music for all to hear. Like it? Put in some money to encourage the local musicians!

Seeing the locals indulge in their game of “group skipping”, you may feel tempted to join in. Want to take up the challenge? Ask politely and chances are, they are gonna let you play along. Just remember that there is a penalty for losing! Our advice would be to watch a few rounds first to get an idea of how it is played before you take the plunge…

With so many activities available, these provide ample opportunities for photography enthusiasts to snap away! Beautiful in the day yet enchanting at night, there is no “right” time to snap pictures. If one can afford the time, come twice just to ensure you have sufficient photos to bring back home with you!

INSIDER TIP:
If you cannot decide when to head over to Hoan Kiem lake, we suggest coming over in the late afternoon around 4pm.
Walk, relax, snap some pictures, and chill out by a cafe nearby.
Upon sunset, get a different view of this lake, and repeat once more, of walking, relaxing, and snapping pictures.
Remember to come during weekends (if possible) to join the locals for some fun!
