Room Service Review: Sofitel Singapore City Centre

When it comes to hotel room service, we generally have a couple of things to look out for in determining if that particular hotel’s room service is worth it. First, we do expect the prices to be quite high, as with most five-star (or otherwise similarly-ranked) hotels. Correspondingly, in terms of taste, the food should be similar to what one can find in good restaurants in the country. Based on the above, we rate Sofitel Singapore City Centre’s room service!

Sofitel Singapore City Centre Room Service - What's for lunch
While at staycations in Singapore, we tend to order local dishes. This is because as locals ourselves, we believe we can judge them quite accurately, and our foreign readers can make a better decision as to whether a particular hotel’s room service is worth it. At Sofitel Singapore City Centre, we decided to do the same as what we normally did.

We first ordered lunch after check-in as we were quite hungry, and the lounge did not offer much food at that time. It was so good that we ordered room service for our supper too. The next day, when our family came over for a swim, we told them great stuff about the room service that they decided to have lunch in the room too. Therefore, for this review, we ate three meals, comprising a total of eight dishes!

First meal (lunch): Nourishing Herbal Soup, Singapore-style “Hokkien” Prawn Noodles, Mango Sticky Rice Dessert
As the missus was feeling under the weather, we decided to order a chicken herbal soup for her. It was a good choice. The soup was rich and indeed nourishing. She felt better after drinking the hot soup, and she could also taste the herbs used to boil the soup. We could tell that Sofitel did not stinge on the ingredients, but really put in a lot of effort for a bowl of soup. We also do not normally come across hotels that serve such soups for room service and were pleasantly surprised Sofitel Singapore City Centre does it. Even better, they do it really well!

Next up, we tried the prawn noodles. Commonly known in Singapore as simply Hokkien Mee, it is essentially a bowl of prawn noodles, cooked in a special/unique/secret recipe broth. Some eateries cook a drier version while some have a wetter version. For Sofitel Singapore City Centre’s version, it comes in the wetter version. It was really good. In fact, it tasted just like how those hawker stalls cook them. It was really delicious and I found myself slurping them up, almost leaving nothing to my lady. The broth was so delicious that I drank it up after swallowing the noodles.

Of course, Sofitel does not stop there. A bonus of ordering Hokkien Mee at Sofitel Singapore City Centre is the elevation of this bowl of noodles. Instead of just using prawns, it uses a huge crayfish as the main ingredient. Add to that many other ingredients, including sotong and roasted pork, and you get a bowl full of goodness.

Lastly, we had the mango sticky rice dessert. We wanted to try something different and thought this could be a unique dish. We were not wrong. Once again, Sofitel elevated the dish to something better. Instead of just having mango, sticky rice, and ice cream on a plate, it is served in a small cup. At the bottom is the sticky rice with mango cubes littered around. Coconut ice cream is then added on the top, so it slowly flows down as we eat the dessert. Parked beside it is a biscotto, so it completes the dessert with some crunchy feel. This whole dessert works perfectly as we use our spoon to cut through the different layers. When we took a bite, we got some sticky rice, a mango cube, and some coconut ice cream. It was indeed a rainbow of flavours and it was a fantastic dessert and dish to end our meal with.

Second meal (supper): Racines’ Chicken Rice
After having a light pre-dinner at the Club Millésime lounge, we felt a little peckish, and thought to order the hotel’s signature chicken rice. We heard great stuff about Racines (the hotel’s main restaurant) from Shutterwhale (source link), and thought we should try their food. It was a great recommendation! Take a look at the picture and you know what we mean. You can tell that it was a proper chicken rice dish, prepared and cooked professionally for a guest. You could see the effort put into making this dish. The rice was fragrant and tasty, with the achar a great starter to the meal. The chicken meat was fresh and moist, while the sauce that the chicken was soaked in was also tasty, and made the chicken that much tastier. The vegetable was a perfect complement to the chicken, and went really well with the rice as well.

Of course, a plate of chicken rice must always come with a bowl of soup. You know you got the real deal when you could taste the chicken in the soup. It was light and was a nice accompaniment to the dish. Obviously, we finished the entire meal in no time!

Third meal (lunch): Racines’ Fried Rice, Angus Meatballs Spaghetti with Marinara and Parmigiano, Crispy Fish Fingers (Kids Menu), Rich Valrhona Chocolate Creme Brulee with Tahitian Vanilla Ice Cream and Orange Ginger Coulis
Our family came over the next day for a swim and they decided to order room service. We did not eat this meal and hence cannot comment on their taste. However, we took feedback from them, and heard that they loved it. Their children enjoyed the food and it says a lot when the plates were empty by the time they finished the meal. While we did not eat this meal, we were pretty hungry when taking those photos!

Total Cost: First meal (S$68), second meal (S$24), third meal (S$82) (all figures exclude service charge and government taxes)
Worthiness: Yes. The food was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed every dish we ordered!
