Room Service Review: Sofitel Saigon Plaza

When it comes to hotel room service, we generally have a couple of things to look out for in determining if that particular hotel’s room service is worth it. First, we do expect the prices to be quite high, as with most five-star (or otherwise similarly-ranked) hotels. Correspondingly, in terms of taste, the food should be similar to what one can find in good restaurants in the country. Based on the above, we rate Sofitel Saigon Plaza’s room service!

We attempted to order a set of dishes that we thought best represent a starter, main, and dessert. Hence, we ordered three local dishes that we thought would represent Vietnam well!

Banh Mi:
Banh Mi was first up, and we must say that the baguette was warm and crispy, which was a good sign. The fillings were generous, with many pork slices and hard-boiled egg. A good amount of mayonnaise was spread throughout the baguette, which was great since it was quite a huge baguette. The taste of the banh mi was pretty decent, and quite filling as well. The fries, though not usually part of a banh mi, was nevertheless a welcome addition, since the hot steaming fries helped to add flavour to the baguette. Coat it with some ketchup and we are loving it!

Beef Pho:
The humble pho is one of Vietnam’s most famous exports and really, we simply had to try it. The ingredients that came with the noodles were quite a lot, with generous amounts of beef slices and beef balls in the soup. The soup was nice, although adding the sauces made it that much better. The noodles were all right too, and worked well with the beef slices. At this point, we were quite filled up, which is always a good sign that the dishes are not too little.

Vietnamese Coffee Cake:
The Vietnamese coffee cake was simple and tasty. In fact, we liked this dish the best in our room service. We think Sofitel Saigon Plaza’s forte actually lies in their sweet treats. Along with some caramel sauce, we finished up the slice in three bites.

Something to note was the addition of a glass of water, even though we did not ask for it. Once again (we know we keep saying this), the service is up there. Knowing that the dishes we ordered contain different types of flavours, some of which might be quite strong, a glass of water was perfect to cleanse the palate before partaking in a new dish. The thought that goes into the staff is simply amazing. This is customer service at its best!

Total Cost: 854,700 VND (excludes service charge and government taxes)
Worthiness: Yes, if you need some local food in a fuss-free and convenient manner

Mario enjoys travelling around the world but finds himself visiting the same cities again and again. At this rate, it is unlikely he will travel "around the world" any time soon. He also has a dream to spend one year catching all the Formula 1 races live.
