Room Service Review: Fairmont Singapore

When it comes to hotel room service, we generally have a couple of things to look out for in determining if that particular hotel’s room service is worth it. First, we do expect the prices to be quite high, as with most five-star (or otherwise similarly-ranked) hotels. Correspondingly, in terms of taste, the food should be similar to what one can find in good restaurants in the country. Based on the above, we rate Fairmont Singapore’s room service!

Lunch: Chicken Rice, Rojak, and Latte

If you follow my hotel reviews, you will know that I like to order local food for room service. I enjoy tasting the hotel’s interpretation of the classic dishes, and see if they are any good. In Singapore, this can be a tall order, since there are so many great eateries offering delicious food at really affordable prices! Even so, I decided to order some of these dishes at Fairmont Singapore to see if they taste good.

I arrived at the hotel hungry, and went about ordering my food once I have settled in. Chicken rice was available, and obviously that had to be ordered. I decided on the rojak as well, since I rarely see that available in Singapore hotels. This is a dish unique to Singapore and I think tourists must surely try this at least once when in Singapore. So, I had to order that as well. Since I had not had any caffeine for the day yet, a cuppa latte would be good to finish the meal with.

The chicken rice was all right. It was not the best chicken rice I had in a hotel, but it was adequate. The chicken meat was nice enough, while the rice was also fragrant. Despite how the picture turned out, it was really nicer than it looks. However, I am not sure if I would order this again the next time I stay in Fairmont Singapore.

Next up was the rojak, a uniquely Singaporean starter or dessert, depending on your preference. It was presented very neatly, with the ingredients separated, so that it would not be soggy by the time you eat it. This is especially important if some prefer to take rojak as a dessert. For tourists who have no idea how this should be eaten, it is really quite simple. Basically, you mix everything together, including the sauce, and stir it until the sauce gets all mixed up with the ingredients. It is similar to how you would prepare a salad, except that this dish is not exactly that healthy. The ingredients tasted fresh, and the fried fritters crispy. The portions were generous, and I had more than enough sauce. I especially enjoyed the crushed peanuts, which just made the rojak taste so good. I enjoyed this dessert.

After which, the latte was just right to complete my meal.

Supper: Satays, sushi, glass of red wine, strawberry smoothie

That night, I decided to order some supper, and was pleasantly surprised to know that there was a special Paris Saint-Germain themed supper menu. Accor (Accor Live Limitless) is the main sponsor for the football club and the hotel created the special menu as the club was going to play in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich. The menu was available only for a limited time and I decided to try out this special menu.

I first tried the sushi and could tell that it was previously chilled. I understand that I ordered supper quite late so these were probably made earlier and chilled. It was all right, although you cannot expect the sushi to taste like those you will find in a Japanese restaurant. For supper, it was adequate. The satays tasted good though. It was delicious, and there was more than enough peanut sauce for the 12 satays. It also came with a generous portion of cucumber, onions, and ketupat, which meant I was beyond full by the time I finished my supper.

As an Accor Live Limitless Gold member, I was entitled to 2 welcome drinks for my stay at Fairmont Singapore. I was happy to know that I can use the coupons not just at the hotel’s restaurants, but that I could do so via room service as well. I decided to get the strawberry smoothie and a glass of house red wine. Both were good choices, with the strawberry smoothie thick and tasty. For the glass of red wine, I thought it tasted pretty good as well. I quite like wine that is smooth and this glass of red wine was nice. I found out later that it was a Miguel Torres Santa Digna Cabernet Sauvignon. Now, I must admit that I know very little about wine and how it should taste like. I only know that I enjoyed this glass of wine. Hence, when I go back to Fairmont Singapore for another stay, I think I will get this glass of wine again.

Overall, it was a decent room service experience with Fairmont Singapore. I think there were some hits and misses on the dishes I ordered, but they seem to be quite generous with the portions. If I were to order room service again the next time I stay at Fairmont Singapore, I will be keen to try the other dishes to see if they taste better.

Total cost: S$115.35 (inclusive of all government taxes)
Worthiness: It is a soft yes. It really depends on the dishes you order and there can be hits and misses.
